History

The original proposal for an airport at Kishangarh came following Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's visit to Ajmer. Initial government efforts to acquire land for the project at Sardana had to be abandoned before the current location was chosen by the district administration.[2] Kishangarh Airport is the first of over 100 airports that are to be built in India by 2020. The foundation stone of the project was laid by the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh in September 2013. The project is being undertaken by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of about ₹161 crores.[1][3][4] 441 acres of land was handed over for the project in 2013.[5]

Location
Kishangarh town is known as the 'Marble City of India' and is on the National Highway 8 near the famous O.P.Marbles at Makrana Road. It is also famous for the Bani Thani painting. The airport is located 27 km from the city of Ajmer. The airport is expected to facilitate transport to the pilgrim sites like the Dargah of Khwaja Garib Nawaz, fort of Prithvi raj Chouhan in the city of Ajmer and also to Pushkar, the site of the annual Pushkar Fair and give a fillip to the region's economic development.[3][6]

Name Demands for naming the airport after Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Veer Teja Ji, Marble City and Prithviraj Chauhan have been raised but the Government has decided to name it as Kishangarh Airport.[2]
Facilities

A 2700 sq m passenger terminal building will handle 150 in and out-bound passengers per hour. Other features at the terminal include 6 check-in counters, two X-ray screening machines for baggage screening and an elevated baggage conveyor belt in the arrivals terminal. The airport will also have parking space for 125 cars.[7]The terminal will feature three-dimensional murals made of marble, 'Bani Thani' portraits, the paintings of the Kishangarh school of paintings and fountains to give the project a local touch.[5] The airport will have a 2,000 metre long runway that will allow daytime operation of smaller aircraft. The parking apron will be able to simultaneously accommodate two ATR aircraft initially.[7]

The Airport Authority of India will generate 100 megawatt power from solar energy to light up the under-construction Ajmer airport at Kishangarh. Considering the scarcity of water in the area, AAI will build a water harvesting system at the airport as also a modern sewage treatment plant for re-use of water.[8]
